Melinda Morrison was three or four years old when her mother, a teacher in the public school system, took notice of her natural artistic ability. She gave Melinda the opportunity to take classes and encouraged the creative spirit in her daughter. When she was in high school, she began drawing figuratively, spurred on by another talented young artist in her art class and several encouraging teachers.

A young and gifted musician as well as a college student majoring in costume design, Brooke Shellberg is full of possibilities. She grew up in a small town in southwestern Colorado, and remembers feeling like she was the “weird girl” in school. True, there is something different about her–she’s an artist.

Over the past year or so, I’ve been on a journey of discovery of my own inner artist. As I’ve traveled this journey I’ve discovered just how wounded I was as an artist. I’ve always known that there was an artist inside me, but she was pushed down, criticized, and made to feel unimportant. The voices inside my head told me I wasn’t good enough, I couldn’t be an artist, no one would think my art important–I listened to those voices and I shut a part of myself down. This has been a season of healing for me, a time of resurrecting some old dreams.
